Zac:

My New Year's resolution, Kim. Okay, here it is.

Kim:

I want to have more energy and more vitality. I want to do some things that are not me. Say yes a lot more.

Zac:

The story we tell about ourselves is actually limiting us.

Kim:

I've never finished anything like that. I've started it, but I've never finished it.

Zac:

At night, I always tell myself I'm going to do something productive. And then I find myself eating chips on the couch.

Kim:

There's nothing that brings me more joy than just to open up a closet and it just be perfect. Shut up, Zac.

Zac:

Are you really. I'm crying.

Kim:

Happy New Year.

Zac:

Happy New Year.

Kim:

Oh, my gosh, Zac. New Year. New you.

Zac:

New Year. Near me.

Kim:

Okay.

Zac:

New Year.

Kim:

Making New Year's resolutions. Cuz it's New Year's Day.

Zac:

It's New Year's Day. Hello, everybody.

Kim:

Hello, y'all.

Zac:

Welcome to the show.

Kim:

Oh, we're Kim. I'm Kim. This is Zac.

Zac:

I'm Zac.

Kim:

I just feel like I take for granted, everybody. Just.

Zac:

My New Year's resolution, Kim. Okay, here it is.

Kim:

Okay, wait a minute. Before you say it, I want one frivolous one, just total frivolous vein, the whole nine yards. And then one like deep, serious, rooted.

Zac:

Okay. All right, all right. Okay, here it is. Ready?

Kim:

Frivolous, vain fun.

Zac:

First, this is something fun. I'm going to be taking an improv class.

Kim:

Oh, my.

Zac:

I took one and I really loved it. So I'm doing it again now.

Kim:

Why? Okay, why? Yeah, tell me why. I think I know why. But I just wanted to.

Zac:

I think it's going to be fun. Like, that's why. Like, really? That's the only reason. And I think it will be also good for.

Kim:

Out of your comfort zone.

Zac:

Out of my comfort zone? Yeah. I've never been someone who's like, this is so weird to me. I'm in the studio. Like, there's here, like, cameras everywhere. How you know, this is not where I expected to be.

Kim:

Yes. Well, that's life.

Zac:

But that's life. But that's the.

Kim:

That's the adventure of life.

Zac:

But I like the idea. I just. All these people. I realized that so many people that I look up to had a background in improv.

Kim:

Really?

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

Oh, that's cool.

Zac:

Like, people that are doing fun, funny stuff, and I'm just like, oh, fly by night.

Kim:

Just out of there. Just, just, just. Yeah, yeah. Spontaneous.

Zac:

And you know what? You know what actually made me think of it? When we were talking to Paul Scheer.

Kim:

I Love Paul.

Zac:

Which he was amazing.

Kim:

I was following him, so.

Zac:

And, you know. Yeah, he's great, but he said something funny, and it made me realize. So it feels like a lot of classes are, like, for kids and stuff. And he said he went to a comedy class or an improv class, and it was all adults, and he was the only, like, teenager. And in my head, I was like, oh, right, I'm an adult. I could do a comedy class.

Kim:

Oh, I'm very responsible.

Zac:

And that's when the idea went into my head.

Kim:

Yeah, okay. I'd love that.

Zac:

Yeah, that's my frivolous. What's your frivolous.

Kim:

No, you got. Okay, I'm going frivolous.

Zac:

Yeah, you gotta go frivolous.

Kim:

I'm going to. Oh, there's so many.

Zac:

All right. Name as many as you.

Kim:

Wait.

Zac:

Rapid fire Frivolous.

Kim:

So one of the. I've already done two because I've, like, redone a closet downstairs for my husband and all his. He's a collectible person.

Zac:

Okay.

Kim:

Do you know those people? Are you one of those people?

Zac:

No.

Kim:

Like, he collects baseball cards and basketball cards and albums and tickets and he's a collector.

Zac:

Collected DVDs back in the day.

Kim:

Yeah, he. Oh, CDs. We have thousands, so. Albums. We have thousands, so it's like. So I may. I've decked him out of closet for Christmas.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

I want to totally simplify. Every single closet that's mine in my house with less than, like, 40 things in it.

Zac:

This is not frivolous.

Kim:

It's not. Oh, for me, it's very frivolous.

Zac:

That's very frivolous.

Kim:

Oh, God. Yeah. To just. To just go through and that sounds like work.

Zac:

That sounds hard.

Kim:

Oh, no, that's such joy for me.

Zac:

Okay.

Kim:

Because I'm a person. Okay. I'm a person who loves organization.

Zac:

I was gonna say in your world, so you should. I wish. I wish we could just, like, walk through everybody. Just like Bell Manor right now with everybody. Because it's so organized.

Kim:

Like, I'm not an organized person. I like it to be organized, though.

Zac:

Except literally, around every corner, in every little dead corner, there's just, like, a ring light or something. Like, Kim. Everybody. Kim has more. I'm trying to go through and, like, organize the equipment situation.

Kim:

Get rid of my ring lights now. Yes. You know, I wish I could just have a ring light right up under my chin the whole time. Makes you look younger.

Zac:

If you asked me how many ring lights Kim Gravel owned, my guess would be like. Like, 22.

Kim:

Oh, minimum.

Zac:

And that's. And that's. That's a legitimate.

Kim:

That's very.

Zac:

There might be 22 on this floor of this, like, house.

Kim:

There is nothing that. There's. There's nothing that brings me more joy. There's some things. It's just as much than just to open a closet and it just be perfect.

Zac:

Yeah, that is. I. I agree with that.

Kim:

And minimal.

Zac:

I want.

Kim:

I want to. This year, I want to just downsize my life.

Zac:

Okay.

Kim:

I can't downsize work, but I can downsize, like, the functionality of my life.

Zac:

Less stuff. Like, we don't need all the stuff.

Kim:

But I want. I just. Yeah. And I just want to give it away. I just want to just, like, bless somebody. I just want everybody. I just want everybody.

Zac:

Okay. I get that.

Kim:

That's my frivolous.

Zac:

Okay. Okay. What is your. Can you. Will you go first for.

Kim:

You go first with a D. I know. It's just a sp. That's why it's called the Kim Gr. Show.

Zac:

That's true.

Kim:

You're a guest.

Zac:

I'm. I don't. Am I a guest today?

Kim:

You're on the couch.

Zac:

You're on the couch. I'm on the couch with Kim.

Kim:

Oh, deep.

Zac:

My deep.

Kim:

Deep.

Zac:

My deep. Okay. I'm going to. This is. This is actually really deep. Okay.

Kim:

I do. Because everybody listening. I want you to have a frivolous and a deep. And let us know what that.

Zac:

And it's hard. I mean, we'll hold each other accountable. Okay. So I think the deep this year is I really want to hold my. Myself accountable.

Kim:

Okay. For.

Zac:

And for a couple things.

Kim:

Okay.

Zac:

For one. So one is what I said last episode. So the social media thing. I want to post more on social media, more of my own stuff that makes me feel good and feel joy and. And really try not to care about what the. How many followers and likes and. Which is hard.

Kim:

Okay.

Zac:

It's hard not to care. But. So that's one thing. Because I. Because I want to do it for fun.

Kim:

Okay.

Zac:

Because I just want to do. I just want to have a creative outlet.

Kim:

You don't have to think about it.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

Put it out there and go.

Zac:

Yeah. And okay. And then two, this is a family one. I want to. I want to put effort into creating memories with the kids at this age.

Kim:

I thought you were saying have another baby.

Zac:

  1. Oh, God. Nope. Ah, that's not in the cards.

Kim:

Oh, that was a realistic.

Zac:

You're like, oh, God.

Kim:

Isn't it the truth?

Zac:

I just. That's exhausting to even Think about.

Kim:

I feel you on that one.

Zac:

I got two, and that's plenty for me.

Kim:

You're blessed.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

You don't need any more blessings.

Zac:

No, I really don't. I want. Okay. So I. I heard this thing, this. This person online, you know, whoever saying that every year, every quarter, they. They do some just, like, big ish. Doesn't to be crazy.

Zac:

Like, doesn't have to be a lot of money or just, like, some adventure with their kids.

Kim:

I love that. The kids will never forget it.

Zac:

Yeah. And so. And some of them might not be, like, you're gonna remember this forever. Some might not be, like, a core memory. Have you heard this thing about, like, core memories?

Kim:

Yes.

Zac:

Yeah, I love that. But, you know, one or two of them will, and I think that'll be fun. So that's my other one.

Kim:

I like that one.

Zac:

You can steal that.

Kim:

I might have to steal a little bit of that since, you know, Beau's getting ready to go to college.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

So I only have, like.

Zac:

What does that feel like? Is that weird?

Kim:

It's exciting and weird.

Zac:

Yeah. Because this year he's going this year, 2025. Wow. That's wild.

Kim:

I know. One of the things I have is to run, like, a half marathon. Shut up, Zac.

Zac:

Okay, sorry. This is my real reaction.

Kim:

Shut up, Zac. I just peel myself.

Zac:

I'm sorry. I'm crying.

Kim:

Oh, tell me why you're crying. I'm laughing so hard sitting here in my Merry Christmas sweatshirt.

Zac:

Okay, wait. Okay. I have.

Kim:

Okay, okay, okay. Why are you laughing?

Zac:

I have a series of questions. Okay. Question one. What's the furthest you've run in the last year?

Kim:

Quarter of a mile. But I've walked. I've walked. The reason I'm saying this is because I loathe working out.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

  1. I got a trainer. Marvin, I love you, but I don't. And I'm hurting so bad in places I did not even.

Zac:

Yeah, you were saying that. Good for you for getting a trainer, though.

Kim:

You know, Amy's a hall, so I mean, like, she's like. I mean, like Wonder Woman. And I'm like, I need to. I need to step up. I don't. I want to have more energy and more vitality.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

And my son runs four miles. Travis runs two or three miles a day. I'm like, you know, Travis runs. Travis is a runner. Yeah.

Zac:

So you could. So that seems more reasonable. If you can start with him.

Kim:

There's no way I can start with him.

Zac:

Well, not start, but if you can run with him, then you're more like.

Kim:

There'S no way I can run with him.

Zac:

Well, at some point, if you're training for.

Kim:

You've got a year to do it. I'm not tripping for a whole marathon now, y'all don't get it twisted.

Zac:

A half marathon or one of them.

Kim:

Little 5Ks, maybe that's more realistic.

Zac:

That's.

Kim:

But I want to do something that I've never done. Like, I'm a type of person. I do what I know I can do and can do it. Do you know what I'm saying?

Zac:

Oh, yeah.

Kim:

Well, it's things that I'm like, I don't know, that I kind of just like, I just can't. It's not me. I want to do some things that are not me.

Zac:

You know, that's like. So I went to that Tony Robbins thing, right? I went to the. Yeah.

Kim:

Didn't you say that was, like, groundbreaking?

Zac:

It was pretty amazing. I mean, he really knows what he's doing.

Kim:

Oh, yeah. You're not Tony Robbins forever for nothing.

Zac:

Yeah, Tony Robbins is very good at what he does. It was so impressive. But the thing, like, how he frames the idea of limiting beliefs like. Like, you're someone. Like my laughter and I'm really sorry.

Kim:

Oh, that was priceless. But that was priceless and truthful. That was the truest thing.

Zac:

That was the truest thing. Yeah, I know. Okay.

Kim:

No, but.

Zac:

We feel that about ourselves, right? The limiting belief of, like, oh, I'm not someone that could run a marathon. I can't run a half marathon. I can't run a half hour. Yeah.

Kim:

I mean, I have that about myself. I think I would die.

Zac:

I mean, I have that about myself, too. Like, we did. We just did for Thanksgiving, they do a huge, biggest in the country turkey trot 5k and 10k thing. Like, 62,000 people did it in Sacramento, and it literally. So my house. My house is here, and this street and this street were both closed. So you. There was no way to leave my.

Zac:

The turkey trot was just around us. Like, we couldn't go anywhere, so we just joined it. I. We joined.

Kim:

We.

Zac:

We paid and we did the whole thing because it's for charity, but I was wiped.

Kim:

Yeah. It's honestly not the running for me. It's the. It's the. Is the discipline of. Yeah, I've never finished anything like that. I've started it, but I've never finished it.

Zac:

Okay.

Kim:

You know, we've got ten pounds to lose. I got to work on that. But, like, I'll never You know, I've got that under, like, accountability in a strong way.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

I want to do something. I want to finish something athletic. I hate it.

Zac:

But stop telling yourself you hate it.

Kim:

I hate it.

Zac:

Stop telling yourself.

Kim:

I know what you have to understand. I really do. It's not my thing. Yeah, my kids are athletic. They did not get it from me. But look at amy. She lost 80 pounds. I mean, she's a beast.

Kim:

I mean, she can lift and all that. And I'm just like, oh, my God, ten pounds is killing me.

Zac:

Amy is incredible.

Kim:

And she's never exercised, did all that either, so. So she's inspiration for me on this. And. And that's. And it's not so much doing the half marathon. It's the fact that I can complete.

Zac:

It at 53, and it's training for it. And it's. And it's. That's the thing. It's like the thing itself is not actually the thing. It's. It's the. The journey to the thing.

Zac:

Right? That's. I'm trying to pay attention to the journey more, too. It's all the stuff that. It's like, oh, we should be doing this, we should be doing that.

Kim:

You know, I say ditch everything that's not working for you and chase what. What you. What you. What your heart's desire. I'm telling you. I mean, it was so great because when you have children that you'll get. Find this out. When you have children and they're seniors and they're getting ready to head into, you know, college and stuff, you almost get to, like, begin again in a.

Zac:

Way, because, well, you'll have a.

Kim:

Because I have an empty. A little bit of an empty. But on top of that, I get to do it through him. So all the things I'm like, I wish, son, I would have done this, this, this, and this. Because, like. Like, he's having a struggle in right now, and I don't really care. I'm not gonna say this to him. So I don't tell him.

Kim:

I don't. I don't. It doesn't mean anything. I want him to. He said, I don't. I don't know what I'm gonna do. I said, you're gonna go to go shoe and figure out how to make this work, right? He's like, I know, but he's not gonna. I said, he will go learn how to learn.

Kim:

Go learn how to negotiate. Go learn how to. When things happen that are cruddy, how do I make it work to my advantage?

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

And he's done it. He has to retake five quizzes in one test. In two weeks. But I'm just saying.

Zac:

But it'll do.

Kim:

But do what you have to do. That's what I'm saying.

Zac:

Like, that's a big lesson. Yeah.

Kim:

I wish I would have thought that when I was heading into college or heading into, you know, young adulthood, I was like, you can do it. And take. Take every opportunity that comes. Your. Say yes a lot more this year.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

Yes. Say yes to Disneyland. Say yes to. Say yes to the girls when they want to sit in color. Say yes to the. To, you know, doing your improv class. Say yes more.

Zac:

Yeah, I'm into that. Okay.

Kim:

I say if you're single, like, somebody might be listening to Single again. Say yes to the date. Swipe right. I don't know what that means, but you know what I'm saying?

Zac:

You know what I mean? Yeah.

Kim:

Go to the concert.

Zac:

Do it all.

Kim:

Go see Taylor Swift. Go see. Oh, my gosh.

Zac:

That would be really fun.

Kim:

Oh, my gosh. I. You know who I want?

Zac:

Did you see Taylor Swift?

Kim:

No.

Zac:

You didn't go to the airstore?

Kim:

I didn't go. Yeah. I can't do that now. That's too loud for me. I'm old. But no, I'm just kidding.

Zac:

I don't know. You're going to concerts. You saw you, too, recently, didn't you?

Kim:

Oh, God, I love you, too. Like, go see those things.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

Save up. Earn the money. Go.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

Do it. We find ways to do what we really want to do.

Zac:

That is totally true. I know.

Kim:

Go on the trip.

Zac:

Run that 5K.

Kim:

I'm going to.

Zac:

I think you should do the half marathon.

Kim:

Okay. How many. How many miles is that?

Zac:

That's 13 miles. That's a lot.

Kim:

Do you have a week to do it?

Zac:

You have. Yeah. You could do it. You do it one mile a day for two weeks. You can run your marathon. That's really funny, Kim. No, let. Okay.

Kim:

Well, Bo had it. Bo had a goal. He wanted start November 30th. He set a goal to run 65 miles by Christmas.

Zac:

Wow.

Kim:

And he's. He's. He's on track. Some days he does two miles, some days he does four. He. And he keeps up with it. And I'm thinking, dang, that's pretty good. I want to do that.

Zac:

Well, that's okay. So that's like, the gamifying of stuff, though. That actually helps a lot when you give yourself, like, little mini goals along the way. You've Turned it into a game.

Kim:

Yeah.

Zac:

That's like all those apps where it's like, if you've done the thing, you get to click the checkbox and how many. What's your streak? And you have five in a row or 20 in a row.

Kim:

I do that. My to do list every day.

Zac:

And then you get obsessed with like, oh, I can't. My streak. I've had 20 in a row. I have to do it today. Yeah.

Kim:

It becomes, you know, it. Because I think that that's what the new year should be about for. For.

Zac:

Can I ask you some advice?

Kim:

Yeah.

Zac:

I've never been. So this is a Tony Robbins limiting belief thing.

Kim:

Okay.

Zac:

I've never been a.

Kim:

What? First of all, what does he say about limiting beliefs before you head into it?

Zac:

I mean, I hope I can characterize it. Well, just do it.

Kim:

You can.

Zac:

The thing that. That to me, stuck out. Yeah. Is just realizing how much of what the story we tell about ourselves is actually limiting us. So in other words, like, true. You know, so much of what we're doing is just, like, our patterns and the way that we, you know, this is how I do whatever. Insert literally anything, and it's like, why do you do it that way? Maybe it just works, like. But maybe the way you're shopping at the grocery store, for instance, leads you to, you know, make decisions that lead to you, you know, not losing the weight or not doing whatever.

Zac:

Right. And so for me, I'm like, okay, there's lots of stuff in my life. So this is what I was gonna say. I've never been a morning person. Right. And I have little kids, so I kind of have to be now to some extent. Although I'm never, like, pleasant in the morning. And I was thinking about it, and I was like, okay, I know why I'm not a morning person.

Zac:

It's because my parents were not morning people, and they stayed up really late watching TV every night and like it. You know, So I inherited all of that, and I do that, but I think it's just because of habits, habit, you know, and because, like, when I'm. When I have a reason to wake up early, I'll do it and I'll be fine. Like when I worked in TV, you know, call times at 4:00am let's go. Whatever. I'm wondering if I should start waking up really early and, like, having an hour to myself in the morning.

Kim:

Yeah. It's a game changer.

Zac:

But I think that. But I'm like, then I would be a different person. Like, then that's the kind of change where I'm like that I'm not me anymore. Like something. I'd have to go to sleep early. I wouldn't be a night person anymore. And I'm kind of scared to even try it.

Kim:

Just do it. Just try it.

Zac:

Because you do that.

Kim:

I do.

Zac:

You're up really early.

Kim:

I am, Yeah. I went to bed like at 8:30. But this is the thing. Why I like the mornings is because in the evenings, like I think there's something scientifically true about this too.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

Don't quote me.

Zac:

I'm quoting you.

Kim:

Quote it.

Zac:

It's for the record.

Kim:

I just. In the nighttime you slow down and it does get quiet.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

And for kids, I get it because you're putting in bed and you're like, thank God.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

And it's an unwind. But in the morning when you wake up and have the quiet time, it's an anticipation. There's an excitement to it.

Zac:

You're totally right about that. It's like, because I feel like in the morning I would be more productive and at night I always tell myself I'm gonna do something productive and then I find myself eating chips on the couch.

Kim:

Yeah. The nighttime is, is. It's a wind down time where in the morning you can wake up, you have energy that you didn't know you had. And the more you do it, the more.

Zac:

But you get what I mean. Like, I'm worried about, like I'm gonna lose part of who I like. My identity.

Kim:

You lose part of who you are used to being.

Zac:

Yeah. But maybe that's good.

Kim:

There's so much more for you, Zac though. There's so much more for you out there. You're so smart and talented and I.

Zac:

Don'T think you can just.

Kim:

There's so much more out there in for all of us. Really.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

And we do limit. I mean, Tony Robbins is right. We have limiting beliefs about what we think about ourselves. Yeah, well, why don't we just decide here? This new year, we're gonna, we're gonna break those limiting beliefs. We're going to connect as a community. And this new year is going to. We're going to look back at 20, 25 a year from now and go, dang, I ran the half marathon.

Zac:

I want to see you run that half marathon. Let's do it. If you, if you do it, I will come to Georgia and watch it.

Kim:

It'll pass the water out for me.

Zac:

And I will give you a tiny cup of water. A cup will be no longer larger than this.

Kim:

I'll just have one gulp.

Zac:

Yeah. That's all you get.

Kim:

That's all I get. One guilt. Let's do it. This New Year's, tell us what your one frivolous New Year's resolution is and one deep change you want to make in your life.

Zac:

Yeah. And if you're on a platform that allows comments, just comment it.

Kim:

Just comment.

Zac:

Comment.

Kim:

Because we want to shout you out.

Zac:

Yeah.

Kim:

20, 25, here we come.

Zac:

Here we come.

Kim:

Cheers.

Zac:

Cheers, everybody.

Kim:

Happy New Year.

Zac:

We're dark for a few weeks because we're updating a lot of stuff. When the show comes back at the end of January.

Kim:

Yeah. Get ready.

Zac:

Get ready. Because it's going to be bigger and better.

Kim:

Yeah. We're connecting, baby.

Zac:

We're connecting. The year of connection.

Kim:

Bam. Oh, yeah. Oh, I love the line. Yes.

Zac:

Much better.

Kim:

Right, Are we recording? Hello? Hello.
